LMS-EPSRC Short Course

Derived Categories & Applications

September 7-11 2009

Course outline

Originally invented and developed as a technical tool for homological algebra, derived categories are now pervasive in many areas of pure mathematics. This course is intended to give students an introduction to derived categories together with applications in a variety of settings across representation theory and geometry.

There will be three main series of lectures:

There will also be two lectures on modern developments by Alastair King (Bath) and Catharina Stroppel (Bonn).

Applications

Applications for this course have now closed.

Fees

All participants must pay their own travel costs. For EPSRC funded students, this should be covered by their DTA.

Fees are not payable until a place on the course is offered. In the event of over-subscription preference will be given to UK-based research students.

Getting to City

City University is about 10 minutes walk from Angel, Barbican, or Farringdon tube stations. Kings Cross St. Pancras is the nearest mainline station, about 20 minutes walk away. Travel information for City University can be found here.

Accommodation

Accommodation for participants will be at Rosebery Hall, 90 Rosebery Avenue, which is conveniently located a short distance from City University (see map below). Further details can be found on their website. Arrival day will be Sunday 6th September; departure day will be Friday 11th September. Please note that check-in is 2-9pm; those planning to arrive after this time can do so, but should let Anton Cox know in advance (by email to the address at the bottom of the page).

Lunch and dinner arrangements (except for the workshop dinner) are left to the participants; there are plenty of places to eat at City and near the University and Rosebery Hall. Many restaurants and bars can be found on Upper Street and in Exmouth Market (marked in red on the map below).

Unfortunately it is not posible to provide internet or email facilities during the workshop. Participants may if necessary ask the local organisers for assistance with this.
