Brief Description: The 'Association Internationale des Femmes' is commonly considered to be the first women's international non-governmental organization (but note earlier organizations, e.g. in the Vincentian tradition).
Founding Rationales:
The Association was intended to support the work of the 'Ligue Internationale de la Paix et de la Liberté' (a quasi peace organization based in Switzerland), to develop 'relationships of trust and possibly friendship between the members', and to establish 'lecture circles' 'to bring an end to the complaints that are made from all directions about the ignorance of women.'
